Psilocybin or 5-MeO-DMT: Which One Is Right for You?

One of the questions I hear most often is:
“What is the difference between psilocybin and 5-MeO-DMT?”
And right after that usually comes:
“Which one is better?”
My answer is always the same: there is no “better” medicine. There is only what may be more appropriate for you.
At Oneness, we don’t start with the medicine. We start with you. Those are the two medicines we work with, and which one is right for a given person is decided with them, not in advance.
Two Psychedelic Medicines, Two Very Different Experiences
Psilocybin and 5-MeO-DMT are both psychedelic compounds, and both interact primarily with the brain’s serotonin system. However, they have different pharmacological profiles and can produce very different experiences.
Psilocybin is converted by the body into psilocin, its active form. Psilocin interacts with several serotonin receptors, with 5-HT2A playing a particularly important role in its psychedelic effects. It also interacts with other serotonin receptors, including 5-HT1A and 5-HT2C.
The experience with psilocybin can involve changes in perception, emotional awareness, thought patterns, memories, and one’s relationship with oneself and the world. For some people, this creates an opportunity for deep introspection and exploration of emotional patterns.
5-MeO-DMT, on the other hand, has a different receptor profile. It interacts strongly with the serotonin system, including 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors, among others. Its pharmacology and the way it affects neural signaling are different from psilocin, and this contributes to a distinctly different psychedelic experience.
5-MeO-DMT is generally much shorter acting than psilocybin, but the experience can be extraordinarily intense. People may experience profound changes in their sense of self, identity, perception, and connection.
The science is continuing to evolve. We understand that serotonin signaling, particularly activity involving receptors such as 5-HT2A, is an important part of psychedelic pharmacology, but the full complexity of how these experiences translate into psychological and therapeutic change is still being studied.
So, Which One Is Better?
Neither.
I don’t believe in choosing a psychedelic medicine because one is considered more powerful, more spiritual, or somehow “better” than another.
Different medicines can offer different therapeutic possibilities, and different people come to this work with different needs, intentions, histories, and goals.
Someone may be looking to explore emotional patterns, difficult life experiences, or deeply rooted ways of thinking. Someone else may be seeking a different kind of experience altogether.
This is why I don’t believe the first question should be:
“Which medicine should I take?”
The first question should be:
“What is it that you are actually looking for?”
At Oneness, We Work With You, Not With the Medicine
This is at the heart of our approach.
We don’t begin with the medicine. We begin with you.
Before recommending a therapeutic approach, we take the time to understand your intentions, goals, personal history, previous experiences, current circumstances, and overall readiness.
There is no universal psychedelic experience and no universal medicine that is right for everyone.
The medicine is not the destination. It is one part of the journey.
Our role is to help you understand the different approaches, determine what may be appropriate for your individual circumstances, and create a thoughtful therapeutic process around the experience, from preparation, through the session, to integration afterward.
Because ultimately, this work isn’t about finding the “best” medicine.
It’s about finding the approach that is right for you.
Ready when you are.
